Chapter 11

Iwatched Frank take a shovel from his truck and carry it into his backyard. We’d gotten back from the Christmas concert, and the oven was full of cinnamon rolls for caroling. What could Frank be doing with a shovel? I pulled on my shoes and quietly went out the front door. I snuck around Frank’s house and peeked into the backyard.

Frank was in the middle of the garden digging. He didn’t seem to care that he was ruining plants. But it wasn’t just random digging—he was digging a hole. The kind that looked measured. That seemed suspicious to me. I couldn’t stay hidden here forever, and right now, nothing was happening worth mentioning to anyone. Just a man in his garden. Killing his plants. I went back home, planning to come back when he wasn’t there.

When I got inside, Jett was pacing across the living room.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Ledford just called. Someone stole my truck and totaled it.”

I frowned. “We have bad luck with vehicles.”

“Ledford said it was deliberate.”

“I’m sorry. You love that truck.”

He shrugged. “Not as much as I did at first. I’ve thought a few times I’d rather have a regular truck again. That doesn’t make it less annoying. The insurance will pay for it, but if someone did it deliberately, I need to know why.”

Jett had a Cybertruck that Boyd bought for him. I thought it looked ridiculous, but Jett and Boyd seemed to think it was great.

“There are probably lots of people who might want to get back at you for tickets or busting them.”

“Too many. I’m not sure I could narrow it down. Ledford told me he’s looking into it.”

I wanted to tell him he could go home and investigate it, but I didn’t want to spend Christmas without him.

“Don’t worry. I’m not going anywhere,” he said like he’d read my mind. “Ledford and the others are capable. I just need to think.”

I nodded and went to the kitchen so he could have time. Sometimes I wished Jett had a quiet, normal job where people didn’t target him. I could understand why he got upset when I got myself into danger.

The timer beeped, and I pulled a pan of cinnamon rolls out of the oven. They smelled delicious.

“Chelsea’s at the door,” my mom said, coming in and opening the fridge.

My mouth turned down. I wondered what she could want. I went and found her standing in the entryway.

“Hi,” I said.

“Hey. So I found something in my mom’s room. I know you do all that investigating stuff, and I figure with the questions you were asking that you’re trying to find Wayne.”

“What did you find?”

She fiddled with a ring on her finger. “It was a note. It said something like Secrets can’t stay secrets forever. I left it where I found it.”

“You didn’t ask your mom about it?”

“No. She doesn’t like it when I get into her business. She’s been a lot more stressed lately. I wonder if someone was blackmailing her.”

“It sounds possible.”

“Do you think it’s related to Wayne?”

“I’m not sure.
